Affordable gliding at Bidford Gliding and Flying Club

Interested in gliding? Think you can’t afford to take part?

We might have the solution for you!

Our Club is a registered Community Amateur Sports Club, which means that we are very keen to see full participation in gliding by all members of the community and we have an Affordable Gliding Scheme to help those on low or modest incomes to take part.

Gliding costs at Bidford involve the payment of an annual membership fee and a launch fee for each flight taken. We do not charge for instruction, either in the air or on the ground, all of which is provided free by qualified and experienced volunteers. You can find a list of all the club’s charges on the Club website.

If you cannot afford the Club’s normal fees, we may be able to help. If you are on a low or modest income, you could be eligible for our Affordable Gliding Scheme.

What is the Affordable Gliding Scheme?

For qualifying members, it provides:

  • A reduced annual membership fee of £52

  • An unrestricted number of launches at the following rates:

    • £9 for each launch up to 1,000 feet

    • Aerotow launches above 1,000’ receive the same discounted fee of £9 for the first 1,000’ with normal launch fees and flight time charges above that. This represents a significant discount on flight costs charged to full members

How do I qualify?

You need to be aged 21 or over and have an annual income of approximately £21,000 per annum or less. We may also be able to accept you into the scheme if you are under 21 and living at home where your family’s gross annual income is less than £21,000. Alternatively, you may wish to consider our separate Junior Gliding Scheme which offers various bursaries and discounts for younger members.

Are there any restrictions if I am an Affordable Gliding Scheme member?

No. Apart from reduced membership and launch fee rates, Affordable Gliding Scheme members are treated in all respects as other club members. You will not be required to undertake any specific duties or denied any benefits in order to receive the preferential rates.

However, it is important to remember that gliding is a team sport that requires many tasks to be undertaken by members to help each other take to the air and develop flying skills. It means helping at the launch point, cleaning and moving gliders, recording flight details and many other support tasks. Volunteering is at the heart of a gliding club. Any member, whatever their level of flying experience or form of membership is expected to play their part.

How do I apply?

Simply contact the Club Membership Secretary at membership@bgfc.uk to request full details of the Scheme and an application form, or phone the office on 01789 778807. All discussions and applications will be treated in the strictest confidence.
